Satellite Internet Revolution in India: Starlink Eyes Affordable Launch Below ₹840 Monthly

India could soon witness a digital leap with the entry of low-cost satellite internet services, as global players like Starlink prepare to roll out unlimited data plans priced at less than ₹840 per month. This move, aimed at accelerating internet access across the nation, comes in response to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India’s (TRAI) latest spectrum pricing recommendations.

As per industry analysts quoted by *The Economic Times*, Starlink is planning to introduce an entry-level package under \$10 (approximately ₹840), targeting mass adoption and a projected customer base of up to 10 million users over time. This aggressive pricing strategy is designed to counterbalance the heavy infrastructure and spectrum costs through wide-scale user acquisition.

TRAI has proposed a 4% annual revenue share from satellite operators, along with an urban subscriber fee of ₹500 per year. Interestingly, rural users are exempted from this additional levy, signaling a push towards bridging the digital divide between cities and remote regions.

Ashwinder Sethi of global consultancy Analysys Mason remarked that despite substantial capital investments, launching services at a lower cost is crucial for market penetration and long-term viability in India’s price-sensitive market.

However, IIFL Research raised concerns about bandwidth limitations. They cautioned that capacity bottlenecks could restrict growth, referencing Starlink’s earlier decisions to temporarily suspend new subscriptions in parts of the U.S. and Africa due to congestion.

In contrast, the pricing landscape in Bangladesh is significantly steeper. There, Starlink charges around ₹4,200 monthly for its internet service, with a one-time equipment cost of nearly ₹33,000 and additional logistics fees of ₹2,000—taking the initial setup cost to approximately ₹37,200.

As India gears up for this potential satellite internet boom, all eyes remain on how affordable pricing and regulatory clarity will reshape the country’s digital infrastructure.
