New Delhi, July 23 : The legal fraternity has thrown its weight behind the students protesting at Jantar Mantar, with a group of Supreme Court advocates gathering to recite the Preamble of the Constitution in a symbolic show of solidarity. The lawyers voiced serious concern over the police action against the demonstrating students and demanded that their constitutional rights be protected.

Leading the gathering, Senior Advocate Indira Jaising made it clear that the advocates had not assembled for any cause of their own. "We are here to stand with the students," she declared, stressing that the demonstration by the legal community concerned the rights of students alone and was, at its heart, a demand for justice.

Jaising underlined that whenever the rights of citizens come under strain, it becomes the duty of lawyers to raise their voice. She reminded the gathering that the Supreme Court exists to dispense justice, describing it as the temple of justice before which the legal fraternity had come with its demands on behalf of the students.
