Suvendu Adhikari Expands Bengal Cabinet, 35 Ministers Sworn In as BJP Strengthens New Government
Kolkata, June 1: West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Monday carried out a major expansion of his government, with 35 ministers taking oath in a significant reshuffle aimed at strengthening the BJP-led administration in the state.
The swearing-in ceremony was held at Lok Bhavan, where Governor R. N. Ravi administered the oath of office to the newly inducted ministers. The expansion comes just weeks after Adhikari assumed office following the BJP’s landmark victory in the 2026 Assembly elections.
Several prominent BJP leaders were inducted into the cabinet, including Shankar Ghosh, Swapan Dasgupta, Tapas Roy, Arjun Singh, Deepak Barman and Manoj Kumar Oraon. Political observers view the move as an effort to balance regional representation while strengthening governance across key departments.
The cabinet expansion marks the formation of a full-fledged Council of Ministers under Adhikari’s leadership. The BJP government had initially begun with a small team after taking charge on May 9, leaving room for a larger administrative structure to be unveiled later.
The development is being seen as a crucial step in consolidating the party’s hold in West Bengal after ending the Trinamool Congress' long-standing rule and ushering in the state's first BJP-led government.
