Suvendu Adhikari’s personal assistant Chandranath Rath was shot dead near Madhyagram in West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas district, police said. Another person accompanying him was injured in the attack.
In a shocking incident that has intensified political tensions in West Bengal, Chandranath Rath, a close aide and personal assistant to senior BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari, was shot dead in Madhyamgram of North 24 Parganas district.
Police sources said the attack took place late at night while Rath was travelling back to Barasat. As his vehicle passed through the Doharia area, unidentified men riding motorcycles allegedly surrounded the car and fired multiple rounds through the window at close range. Rath, who was seated beside the driver, suffered critical injuries during the assault.
He was immediately rushed to a nearby private hospital, where doctors declared him dead. Another person accompanying him in the vehicle also sustained bullet injuries and is currently undergoing treatment in critical condition.
Investigators suspect the murder was carefully planned. Forensic teams visited the crime scene and collected evidence, while police launched a large-scale search operation to track down those involved in the killing.
The incident comes at a politically sensitive time, only days after the BJP registered a major electoral victory in the state. Reports of clashes and violence from several districts have already raised concerns over the post-election atmosphere in Bengal.
West Bengal BJP president Samik Bhattacharya strongly condemned the attack and accused political opponents of targeting BJP workers and leaders. Meanwhile, the Trinamool Congress also denounced the killing and called for a court-monitored CBI probe to ensure a transparent investigation.
The murder has triggered fresh political outrage across the state, with demands growing for swift arrests and stronger action against those responsible.
