UGC Red Flag 2026: 10 New Institutions Added as India's List of Fake Universities Swells to 32
New Delhi, 22 Feb : The University Grants Commission (UGC) has issued an important warning for students and parents across the country. It has officially identified 32 unrecognized and fraudulent universities operating in India for 2026.
This is a significant increase from last year's count of 22. The regulatory body has added 10 new institutions to its blacklist. The UGC has strongly warned students against enrolling in these schools, as any degree they offer is not legally valid.
Currently, these fake educational institutions exist in 12 different states. Recent updates show that four new states—Haryana, Rajasthan, Jharkhand, and Arunachal Pradesh—have now been noted by the UGC, each reporting one fraudulent university.
The national capital remains the biggest hotspot for these illegal operations. Delhi leads with an alarming 12 fake universities, including names like Commercial University Ltd., Vocational University, and the Indian Institute of Science and Engineering. Uttar Pradesh comes next, hosting four unrecognized institutions, including Gandhi Hindi Vidyapith and Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Open University. Other states with multiple unauthorized universities include West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, and Puducherry.
With college admissions approaching, the UGC urges all prospective students to check the accreditation status of their chosen colleges and universities on the official UGC website. Falling victim to these deceptive institutions not only leads to significant financial losses but also threatens the academic and professional futures of students.
