Vehicle On Alcohol : India Moves Closer to E85 Fuel Rollout, Draft Rules Under Preparation

New Delhi, 24 April : India is preparing to introduce a higher ethanol-blended fuel, with the Centre working on draft regulations to enable the use of E85 fuel — a mix of 85% ethanol and 15% petrol — as part of its broader energy transition strategy.

Officials familiar with the development indicate that the proposed framework will support the adoption of flex-fuel vehicles (FFVs), which are capable of running on varying blends of petrol and ethanol, ranging from E20 to E85 and higher.

The initiative is aimed at reducing India’s dependence on imported crude oil amid ongoing global uncertainties, particularly in West Asia. By increasing the use of domestically produced ethanol — derived primarily from sugarcane and food grains — the government also seeks to boost the agricultural sector while lowering carbon emissions.

Under the proposed system, flex-fuel vehicles will be equipped with technology that allows engines to automatically adjust to different fuel compositions. This eliminates the need for manual intervention by users when switching between fuel blends.

At the same time, regulatory authorities are working on updated testing and compliance standards to ensure vehicle safety and performance with higher ethanol concentrations.

However, experts note that ethanol has a lower energy density compared to petrol, which could result in reduced fuel efficiency. On the other hand, its higher octane rating may offer certain performance advantages. Similar concerns around mileage were previously observed during the rollout of E20 fuel.

The move forms part of India’s long-term plan to expand ethanol blending beyond the current targets, positioning cleaner and locally sourced fuels as a viable alternative to conventional petrol.

If implemented, the transition is expected to gradually reshape the country’s automotive and fuel ecosystem, with newer vehicles likely to be designed for compatibility with higher ethanol blends, while older models may face limitations.
