West Bengal Begins Major Land Transfer to BSF for Indo-Bangladesh Border Fencing

Kolkata, May 21 : The West Bengal government has started handing over land to the Border Security Force for the construction of barbed-wire fencing along the India-Bangladesh border, marking a significant push toward tightening border security in the state.

The process was formally launched at Nabanna in the presence of senior BSF officials, with Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari overseeing the initiative. During the announcement, the Chief Minister accused the previous administration of slowing down border protection efforts through a lack of cooperation.

He said stronger fencing was necessary to tackle growing concerns linked to infiltration, smuggling, fake currency circulation, forced religious conversions, and criminal activities allegedly involving illegal Bangladeshi entrants.

West Bengal shares nearly 2,200 kilometres of the India-Bangladesh border, making it one of the most sensitive frontier regions in the country. While around 1,600 kilometres have already been fenced, nearly 600 kilometres still remain open.

As part of the latest phase, land has been transferred for 27 kilometres of development work. Officials said 18 kilometres will be used for border fencing, while the remaining 9 kilometres will support BSF camps, outposts, and related infrastructure.

The state government has indicated that additional land transfers will take place in the coming months. Authorities also confirmed that the entire cost of the project will be borne by the central government and the BSF.
