West Bengal Government Orders Immediate Closure of Unauthorized Toll Gates Across State
Siliguri , May 13 : The Government of West Bengal has issued a strict directive ordering the immediate shutdown of all unauthorized toll gates, drop gates, barricaded structures, and illegal vehicular collection points operating across the state.
According to an official order issued by the Office of the Chief Secretary on May 12, 2026, all toll collection points functioning without proper approval or authorization from the competent authority of the West Bengal government must cease operations immediately.
The order, signed by Chief Secretary Manoj Kumar Aggarwal, instructed all District Magistrates to identify such illegal toll or drop gates within their respective jurisdictions and ensure their immediate removal or closure.
District administrations have also been directed to take preventive measures to stop the re-establishment of these unauthorized collection points in the future.
The circular further stated that any collection of fees, levies, or charges at such illegal points must stop with immediate effect. Authorities have also been asked to prepare a complete list of all authorized and unauthorized toll collection points, including details regarding the agencies collecting tolls and the duration of their tenders.
The compiled report has to be submitted to the Under Secretary by 12 noon on May 15, 2026.
The move is being viewed as a major crackdown against unauthorized roadside toll collections and illegal checkpoints that have often triggered complaints from transport operators and commuters in several districts of West Bengal.
Officials warned that the order must be implemented “in letter and spirit” and that accountability would be fixed in case of non-compliance.
