West Bengal Reinforces Cattle Slaughter Regulations : Slaughter allowed only after official approval; open slaughter banned across the state
Kolkata, May 13 : The West Bengal government has announced stricter enforcement of cattle slaughter regulations, making official certification compulsory before any cow, bull or buffalo can be slaughtered in the state.
Under the West Bengal Animal Slaughter Control Act, 1950, authorities stated that cattle can only be slaughtered if they are declared permanently unfit for breeding, farming or agricultural work due to old age, illness or serious injury.
As part of the updated enforcement process, approval must be granted jointly by local civic authorities and a government veterinary officer. Officials said certification will only be issued after verifying that the animal is either above the prescribed age limit or physically incapable of being used for agricultural purposes.
The government has also prohibited slaughter in public spaces and unauthorised locations. Such activities will now be restricted to approved slaughterhouses operated or recognised by municipal bodies and local administrations.
Officials warned that violations of the rules may lead to legal action, including imprisonment, fines or both. Enforcement agencies have also been directed to intensify action against illegal slaughter operations and unauthorised cattle trade networks functioning in different parts of the state.
The renewed enforcement drive comes after the recent political change in West Bengal, where the BJP formed the government following the 2026 Assembly elections. Since taking office, the administration has introduced several measures focused on law enforcement and regulatory oversight.
State officials clarified that the latest directives are based on existing legal provisions and earlier court observations related to cattle slaughter regulations. Authorities added that individuals whose applications for slaughter certificates are rejected will be allowed to appeal before the designated authorities within a specified period.
Cattle slaughter laws remain a sensitive and widely debated issue across India, with regulations varying from state to state depending on local laws and government policies. While some states enforce complete bans, others permit regulated slaughter under specific conditions.
