Abhishek Banerjee Alleges Attack During Sonarpur Visit, TMC Blames BJP for Violence
Kolkata, May 30: Political tensions rose in West Bengal on Saturday after Trinamool Congress National General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee claimed he was attacked while visiting Sonarpur in South 24 Parganas. He was there to meet families affected by recent post-poll violence.
Reports say a group of protesters threw eggs, stones, shoes, and bricks during Banerjee’s visit, causing chaos at the scene. The TMC leader stated he hurt his eye and accused BJP-backed supporters of planning the attack.
Banerjee mentioned that the whole incident was recorded and said he would pursue legal action. He also claimed the assault was a targeted attempt to intimidate him amid rising political unrest in the state.
The incident happened during his outreach program for party workers affected by post-election violence. TMC leaders condemned the event, while party chief Mamata Banerjee held BJP-backed elements responsible for the attack.
The BJP denied the accusations and rejected any involvement in the incident. This clash has heightened the already tense political situation in West Bengal following the recent Assembly election results.
