Australia will enforce a nationwide ban on social media use for children under 16 starting December 10, 2025.
The new regulation falls under the Online Safety Amendment Bill 2024 and requires platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, Snapchat, and X to block users below the age limit. Companies that fail to follow the rule may face fines reaching up to USD 49.5 million.
The decision has been introduced to address growing concerns about the impact of social media on children’s mental health and safety. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese stated that the government aims to prevent the digital environment from harming young people or affecting their development. The ban applies to creating or accessing accounts on major platforms designed primarily for social interaction. Authorities also mentioned that more platforms may be included later depending on technological developments.
The move marks one of the strictest social media age regulations in the world and is expected to significantly reshape how young users interact with online platforms.
