Big Update for Students: CBSE Makes 3 Languages Mandatory for Class 9 From July 1

New Delhi, May 16 : Attention parents and students! The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has just rolled out a major change for the high school curriculum. Starting July 1, 2026, students entering Class 9 for the 2026-27 academic session will officially have to study three languages instead of the usual two.

Here is the most important part of the new rule: out of the three chosen languages, at least two absolutely must be native Indian languages. Wondering about foreign languages? If a student wants to learn French, German, or Spanish, they can definitely still pick it as their third language (as long as the first two are Indian) or simply take it as an extra fourth subject.

Now, before you worry about extra exam stress, there is some good news. The board has explicitly stated that there will be no final Class 10 board exam for this new third language. To keep the pressure off the kids, schools will test this third language internally. While the final grades will show up on the CBSE certificate, failing or struggling with it will not stop anyone from sitting for their main Class 10 board exams.

Because the current academic year has already kicked off, CBSE is giving schools plenty of breathing room to adjust. To handle the logistics, schools are allowed to use hybrid online classes, share language teachers with nearby institutes, or even bring in retired educators to make the transition as smooth as possible.

This major shift is a direct step toward promoting a more diverse, multilingual learning environment in line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
