India Mandates Full Six-Stanza Vande Mataram at Official Events — New Protocols Take Effect
The Union Home Ministry has issued fresh guidelines mandating the full six-stanza rendition of the national song Vande Mataram at official government events, school programmes, and major state ceremonies. The directive restores the complete original composition written by Bankim Chandra Chatterjee.
As per the new protocol, the song — which runs for approximately three minutes and ten seconds — must be performed before the National Anthem, Jana Gana Mana, whenever both are included in the same event. Attendees are required to stand in attention during its rendition as a mark of respect.
The updated rules bring back the four stanzas that were previously not included in official practice and lay down specific procedures for occasions such as flag hoisting ceremonies, award functions, and formal government gatherings. The move aligns with the 150th anniversary of Vande Mataram and aims to ensure uniform respect and observance of national symbols across the country.
