Indian Army Aviation Evacuates Casualty From 18,600 Feet Near Nun Kun
Ladakh, Aug 30: Indian Army Aviation pilots carried out a challenging high-altitude casualty evacuation from an altitude of around 18,600 feet near Nun Kun, overcoming strong winds, difficult terrain and the absence of a suitable helicopter landing site.
According to the Indian Army, the evacuation was conducted from an extremely difficult slope where conventional landing was not possible.
To operate safely at the extreme altitude, the helicopter was made lighter by removing non-essential equipment and carrying limited fuel. The reduced weight helped improve the aircraft’s performance in the thin air and demanding high-altitude conditions.
During the operation, the Army aviators executed a highly challenging manoeuvre in which the helicopter landed with only one skid touching the slope, allowing the casualty to be evacuated despite the lack of a proper landing area.
The mission was further complicated by strong winds and limited time. The evacuation was undertaken during the last available landing window of the day, making precision and timing critical to the operation.
Despite the difficult conditions, the pilots successfully completed the evacuation and brought the casualty out of the high-altitude location.
The Indian Army described the mission as a demonstration of the skill, courage, determination and compassion of its Army Aviation personnel.
The Nun Kun mountain massif, located in the western Himalayas, is known for its extreme altitude, rugged terrain and challenging weather conditions, making helicopter operations in the region particularly demanding.
