Karnataka Police in Mangaluru have arrested seven people in a case involving a minor college student.
A man reportedly met the girl on Instagram, sexually assaulted her, and recorded the act. The video was then shared with others.
According to police, the girl, who is a minor, met the main suspect, Karthik, on Instagram two months before the incident. Their online friendship turned into a relationship. In late June, Karthik invited her to lunch and then took her to a secluded, wooded area.
Police say Karthik sexually assaulted her. Another man, Rakesh Saldana, also reportedly assaulted her while Karthik recorded it on video. Karthik later shared the video with several others.
After the girl filed a complaint, police arrested Karthik and Rakesh. They also arrested five other people for spreading the video. Since the survivor is a minor, the case has been registered as gang rape under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy confirmed the arrests and said an investigation is underway.
