On the night of May 7, as Pakistani shelling intensified along the Line of Control in the Poonch sector, Lance Naik Dinesh Kumar of the 5 Field Regiment remained unwavering at his post—calm, vigilant, and resolute, just as he had been throughout his decade of service in the Indian Army.
A native of Palwal, Haryana, Dinesh was the eldest among five brothers. Two of his younger siblings are also in the Army. His wife, a practicing advocate, is currently expecting their child. With tears in his eyes and pride in his voice, his father said, “I will send Dinesh’s child to serve too—this land is worth every sacrifice.”
That night, as terrified civilians fled to safety and villages trembled under unprovoked enemy fire, Lance Naik Dinesh went beyond the call of duty. On patrol amid the chaos, he guided villagers to nearby bunkers, shielding lives with sheer grit and presence of mind.
Even when a mortar shell struck dangerously close, he did not retreat. He stood his ground. The blast took a fatal toll, and though he was swiftly evacuated, the injuries proved too severe.
His bravery saved lives. His sacrifice will not be forgotten.
