Miraculously Alone Survivor Emerges From Air India AI171 Crash Near Ahmedabad Airport
Ahmedabad, June 12 : In a rare and tragic turn of events, one passenger—Ramesh Vishwakarma—has survived the devastating crash of Air India Flight AI171 near Ahmedabad airport on Thursday, June 12. The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner was on its way to London Gatwick when it crashed minutes after takeoff, reportedly killing nearly all 242 passengers and crew onboard.
Ahmedabad Police Commissioner GS Malik confirmed the survival, stating that the lone survivor was found in seat 11A and is currently receiving treatment at a hospital. “He is under medical care. We have yet to determine the final death toll as the aircraft went down in a densely populated residential zone,” Malik said. Authorities believe the death toll could rise due to the impact on nearby buildings.
Aviation data from Aerolopa reveals that seat 11A is a window seat located in the front row of the Economy Class, just above the aircraft’s wings. Investigators suggest that Vishwakarma managed to leap from the aircraft just before it crashed.
Flight AI171 departed from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport at 1:38 PM IST with 242 people onboard, including 169 Indian nationals and 53 British nationals. Moments after takeoff, the aircraft lost altitude and plunged into a residential neighborhood, triggering a massive explosion. Before impact, a MAYDAY call was reportedly issued, although communication was lost shortly thereafter. Officials confirmed that five students were among the deceased after the aircraft struck a doctors’ hostel near the crash site.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the incident as “heartbreaking beyond words,” while UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer called it “devastating.” Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu stated that emergency teams were swiftly deployed, and recovery operations are ongoing.
Air India, owned by the Tata Group, is actively cooperating with authorities to investigate the cause of the crash. Industrialist Gautam Adani also expressed deep condolences, assuring support to affected families.
As of Thursday evening, Air India officials were still verifying passenger details. Meanwhile, Ramesh Vishwakarma remains the sole known survivor, and his firsthand account is expected to play a vital role in uncovering the final moments of Flight AI171.
