RG Kar Case Takes Fresh Turn as Calcutta High Court Orders New CBI SIT Probe
Kolkata, May 21 : The Calcutta High Court has ordered the Central Bureau of Investigation to create a Special Investigation Team to look into claims of a possible cover-up in the shocking RG Kar Medical College rape and murder case, which caused outrage in Kolkata and beyond.
The court instructed the new CBI-SIT, led by the agency's Joint Director for the East, to present its findings by June 25. This announcement comes as the victim’s family, activists, and political figures push for a deeper investigation into allegations that key evidence may have been overlooked or concealed.
The case involves the violent rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor, whose body was found inside RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in August 2024. Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer, was later convicted and sentenced to life in prison, but the victim’s parents insist that others may have played a role.
The situation became more controversial when former Calcutta High Court judge and MP Abhijit Gangopadhyay accused the CBI investigating officer of neglecting critical evidence related to the crime scene. He also claimed that important video footage was erased during the probe.
The investigation has expanded in recent months. The CBI is looking into allegations of evidence tampering, conspiracy, and misconduct related to the hospital. Several officials, including high-ranking IPS officers and former RG Kar principal Sandip Ghosh, are now being examined in related inquiries.
Meanwhile, hearings related to the case continue before a newly formed bench of the Calcutta High Court, as calls for a thorough and open investigation grow across West Bengal.
