Sikkim’s Lifeline Under Threat: The Grim Reality of NH10 and Teesta Erosion

The recurring erosion caused by the swelling of the Teesta River each year has made it increasingly clear that the problem cannot be contained through temporary measures. The condition of NH10, Sikkim’s primary highway link to the rest of India, cannot be permanently resolved unless a comprehensive mega infrastructure project is undertaken — ideally by a reputed international developer with proven expertise in complex terrain engineering.

Simply patching, mending, or repairing this critically damaged stretch between Rangpo and Sevoke serves no meaningful purpose. It only results in the wastage of public funds while enriching vested stakeholders.

When it comes to the railway project, many locals view it as a ticking time bomb, one that could potentially lead to a major disaster if due diligence and safety measures are not prioritized.

Sikkim continues to suffer from decades of infrastructural neglect, particularly in highway development. The NH10 serves as the state’s major lifeline, connecting Sikkim with the mainland and sustaining its socio-economic framework.

Given that tourism forms the backbone of Sikkim’s economy, the deteriorating condition of this crucial route has severely impacted the livelihoods of thousands who depend on tourist inflow. Each year, landslides, roadblocks, and unsafe travel conditions deter visitors, leaving the local tourism sector in distress.

This ongoing crisis reflects a tragic story of administrative apathy. Despite repeated pleas, there appears to be little urgency from New Delhi to address Sikkim’s infrastructural plight. The question remains — whom should Sikkim now turn to for relief from this long-standing trauma?
