Singapore Scientists Develop World's First Washable Touchscreen Clothing
Singapore, October 24 : Researchers at the National University of Singapore (NUS) have developed what they describe as the world's first touchscreen integrated directly into clothing, allowing users to operate digital functions by touching their sleeves.
The innovation uses specially engineered electronic fibres woven into fabric, transforming an ordinary-looking sleeve into a flexible, breathable and washable digital display.
Developed by a team led by Assistant Professor Tural Khudiyev, the prototype features a touchscreen measuring 168 mm × 105 mm, capable of displaying photographs, playing videos, operating a calculator and functioning as a compass.
The smart sleeve can also measure body temperature, respond to voice commands and receive images wirelessly through Bluetooth.
Remarkably, the touchscreen continued functioning after 50 machine washes and 1,000 bending cycles, demonstrating its potential durability.
Published in the scientific journal Nature on October 21, the research could eventually lead to smart clothing that monitors health, displays real-time information and connects people with digital technology without requiring a conventional screen.
The technology remains a research prototype and is not yet a commercially available product.
