Sonam Wangchuk Ends 26-Day Hunger Strike After Government Assurance
New Delhi, July 24: Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk on Friday ended his 26-day indefinite hunger strike after the Central Government assured that students who participated in peaceful protests would not face punitive or retaliatory legal action.
Wangchuk had launched the fast in solidarity with students protesting over the alleged NEET paper leak and other examination-related issues. During the course of his fast, he repeatedly appealed for the protection of peaceful protesters and called for meaningful dialogue on education reforms.
According to reports, the decision to end the hunger strike came after discussions between government representatives and Wangchuk, amid growing concerns over his deteriorating health and the possibility of unrest.
While Wangchuk has concluded his fast, protest organisers have indicated that the broader agitation over examination reforms and accountability will continue, maintaining their demands for further action by the government.
