Sudden Earthquake Tremors Shake Kolkata, Residents Flee Homes and Offices

Kolkata, 27 Feb : On Friday afternoon, Kolkata felt noticeable earthquake tremors that caused many residents to rush out of their homes and workplaces in alarm. The tremors hit in the early afternoon and were felt throughout the city and in nearby areas of West Bengal.

According to news agency PTI, the earthquake was recorded at around 1.22 pm, an official from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) confirmed.

The quake measured between 5.3 and 5.5 on the Richter scale according to seismic agencies. Its epicenter was in neighboring Bangladesh, southwest of the BMD Seismic Centre in Agargaon, Dhaka. Although the tremors lasted only a few seconds, they were strong enough for people to see objects moving and buildings swaying, especially in high-rise apartments and offices.

Videos and social media posts showed ceiling fans shaking and furniture vibrating, leading many individuals to step outside and gather in open areas as a safety measure.

Despite the initial panic, there have been no reports of major injuries or serious structural damage so far. Authorities and emergency services are monitoring the situation and have advised residents to stay calm while assessments are conducted.
