Tragedy Turns Festival into Mourning: Kite String Causes Fatal 70-Foot Fall for Family in Surat
Surat, 16 Jan : A devastating incident marred the Makar Sankranti festivities in Surat, Gujarat, as a family of three lost their lives in a freak accident on a city flyover.
The tragedy unfolded when a man, accompanied by his wife and their 7-year-old daughter, was riding a two-wheeler across a 70-foot-high flyover. According to reports, a stray kite string (manja) suddenly became entangled around the man's neck or body while he was driving.
The man and their 7-year-old daughter died on the spot. The mother survived initially after landing on an autorickshaw but died today due to her injuries.
The incident occurred on the Chandrashekhar Azad Flyover. The man, Rehan, was out for a ride with his wife, Rehana, and daughter Aisha, on the occasion of Makar Sankranti.
In a frantic attempt to remove the sharp string, the rider lost control of the motorcycle. The vehicle veered off course and slammed into the flyover's retaining wall with such force that all three passengers were thrown off the bridge. They plummeted 70 feet to the ground below, resulting in fatal injuries for the entire family.
This heartbreaking event highlights the severe dangers posed by kite strings, particularly during the Uttarayan festival, where the use of sharp, glass-coated strings often leads to serious injuries and fatalities among commuters.
