Why Is Nepal Demanding Climate Compensation From US, China, India ?
Nepal is demanding "climate compensation" from India, China, and the US after a devastating glacial-collapse flood on August 26, 2026 near its Tibet border, which killed around 900 people and destroyed homes, schools, and hydropower projects. Nepal's Foreign Minister called it a "Himalayan Tsunami" — a wall of water 20-30 meters high moving at 180 km/h.
The core argument, put forward by Nepal's Finance Ministry and Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal: Nepal's own carbon emissions are negligible, yet it's bearing the brunt of climate-driven glacial melt caused largely by the world's top emitters. They're framing this as a matter of legal and moral liability rather than aid or charity, and have formally submitted claims to India, China, the US, and the international Loss and Damage Fund.
Nepal also warns that melting Himalayan glaciers threaten water security for over 2 billion people across South Asia, making this a regional survival issue, not just a bilateral dispute.
